The WWE Money in the Bank match has been a staple in the company for 20 years. First introduced at WrestleMania 21 and now its own standalone event, Money in the Bank has established itself as one of the most anticipated shows on the calendar.
With the winners of the respective matches almost guaranteed to be champion over the next few months along with the ladder matches always promising high spots and drama, the event has not gotten stale despite being an annual fixture. With many World Champions and historic moments created from the match, Money in the Bank has generated some interesting statistics.
No Successful WWE Money In The Bank Cash-Ins Have Been Via Submission
In total, 27 of the briefcase holders have gone on to win the World/Women’s Championship. Aside from Asuka, who won the title by capturing the briefcase as opposed to competing in a match, every other successful cash-in has been via pinfall.
John Cena, Seth Rollins & Charlotte Flair Have Dealt With The Most Cash-Ins
Although CM Punk, Edge and The Miz have held the briefcase the most with 2 cash-ins each, John Cena, Seth Rollins and Charlotte Flair have each been targeted by Money in the Bank winners 3 times. Cena lost to the first 2 winners Edge and Rob Van Dam at New Year’s Revolution and One Night Stand, respectively, but was able to defeat Damian Sandow in 2013. Rollins lost his WWE Championship to Dean Ambrose in 2016 and to Brock Lesnar in 2019, and was also United States Champion when Austin Theory cashed in. However, Rollins was able to remain champion against Theory. For Flair, The Queen lost the title in 2018 to Carmella, 2019 to Bayley and in 2021 to Nikki A.S.H.

Money In The Bank Is The Most Popular PLE For A Cash-In
While some have bided their time when it comes to Money in the Bank, others have chosen not to wait and have used their opportunity the same night. With Kane, Dean Ambrose, Alexa Bliss, Liv Morgan and Drew McIntyre all cashing in just hours after winning their match, Money in the Bank is the most likely place for a possible title change.
A Reluctant First Winner
Edge made history in 2005 by becoming the first-ever winner of the Money in the Bank contract and went on to win his first WWE Championship the following year. However, in interviews that have taken place since, The Rated R Superstar admitted that at first he did not want to be a part of the match as he was tired of being the ladder match guy. Thankfully for Edge, the Hall of Famer eventually agreed to participate and was rewarded with the first of many title reigns.
Less Than 10% Of Cash-Ins Have Been Announced Ahead Of Time [And Only One Was Successful]
Of the 33 cash-ins, 30 have been spontaneous and only 3 have given their opponents fair warning ahead of time that they will have to put the title on the line. In 2006, Rob Van Dam told John Cena that he would be using his opportunity at One Night Stand, which saw RVD defeat Cena and win the WWE Championship. The other 2 pre-announced cash-ins of John Cena vs. CM Punk and Braun Strowman both ended in a no contest, the latter being a Hell in a Cell match.
It Goes Both Ways
Edge, CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio, John Cena, Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre are all members of an exclusive club. While they have all won the Money in the Bank contract and everyone apart from Cena and McInytre became champion as a result of their cash-in, all have also seen their World Title Reigns come to an end via cash-in.
