Gunther has given his thoughts on the finish to his WrestleMania 41 match against Jey Uso, which resulted in a rare loss for The Ring General.
Taking place in the opening match of Mania 41 weekend, the World Heavyweight Champion Gunther put the title on the line against Royal Rumble winner Uso. After Uso hit multiple splashes on his opponent, the former Tag Team Champion won the top prize on Raw by forcing Gunther to tap out to the sleeper hold.
With WWE fans being conditioned to believe that a submission loss is the worst way to lose a match, Gunther has been hit with repeated “You tapped out” chants in the months that followed, and also needed to rebuild his momentum by picking up big wins over the likes of John Cena, Goldberg and AJ Styles.
Speaking with Cody Rhodes on the What Do You Wanna Talk About podcast, the Raw star said the following about the finish:
“With Jey, at that moment, that’s the thing, I can swallow my pride. When it’s over, it’s over, I have no issue with that. If the audience views that as weakness, let them be. It’s alright.”
Gunther Got Revenge On Jey Uso
Although it was Uso’s night at WrestleMania, it was Gunther who had the last laugh. 51 days after the title change, Gunther defeated Uso in the rematch to win back the World Title, holding it until SummerSlam when he lost the championship to CM Punk.
