Dominik Mysterio Addresses Chances Of Defending WWE Title Against John Cena

Dominik Mysterio has addressed the rumours that he might be facing John Cena as part of the Hollywood star’s retirement tour.

With just 2 matches left as part of the farewell tour, one of which being the last-ever match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, the list of possible opponents or the Hollywood star has now shrunk significantly.

Although Cena has accomplished just about everything there is to achieve in the pro wrestling world, he famously has never won the Intercontinental Championship, joining Sheamus in failing to capture the prestigious title. As Mysterio currently holds that championship, there has been speculation that Cena could look to add that title to his collection and become a Grand Slam Champion to close out his career. If this match does take place, it would likely be at Survivor Series in November, provided that Cena is not in the WarGames match.

Despite the fact that nothing has been teased between the 2 on TV, Mysterio is well aware of the rumours. While appearing on the Graps & Yaps podcastMysterio addressed the possibility of the match taking place:

“I mean, at the end of the day, I’m here, if John Cena wants some he can come get some. He’s got four dates left you said? I mean if that old geezer wants me to put a final nail in his coffin, I’ll be more than happy to. That’s what I’m here for. I’m here to be and stay your Dirty double champ.”

Mysterio won the IC Title back at WrestleMania 41, which was also his first singles championship on the main roster.

Dominik Mysterio Previously Commented On Facing John Cena

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet in 2024 shortly after the Cena retirement tour was announced, Mysterio spoke about previously being in non-televised matches against the 17-time World Champion earlier in his career:

“I’ve actually wrestled John in a dark match for SmackDown. But I would love to get my hands on Cena again. Yeah, I have some history there that I’d like to touch back with.”

“I’m trying to find the right word for it. It was a surreal moment, because I grew up watching him, had his album, signed and everything. Again, big Cena guy too, growing up. Then, not only that, but when he came back the first time, when did the summer of Cena against Roman, I was along for the ride on that one. All the live events. I was tagging with my deadbeat and Cena against Roman and The Usos. It was me, John Cena, Rey Mysterio, against Roman and The Usos. So him being okay with me [being in the match], I shouldn’t have been in that [or] in any of those matches leading into SummerSlam. In no way, shape or form should I have been in that ring with any of those guys, maybe my dad. But him being able to do that for me and just giving me his advice, going through 30 plus days of every week, just something different, and then flipping it around to where he’s still in the same spot but now I’m the bad guy, and we got to work that one time. So I would definitely love to get back in the ring with him and mix it up.”

Unsurprisingly, there has also been a surge in demand for John Cena’s last match, with more than 50,000 fans trying to get tickets for the event.
