Cody Rhodes has discussed his contract and if there were ever any considerations to return to AEW while negotiating a new deal.
In one of the most shocking moments of 2022, Rhodes made the jump from AEW to WWE, making a triumphant return at WrestleMania 38 to defeat Seth Rollins and begin his rise to the main event scene. 2 years on and Cody Rhodes confirmed that he had re-signed with WWE on a deal that would last multiple years and take him beyond his 40th birthday. However, as his contract neared its end, was there ever a consideration to return to the promotion he helped to establish in 2019?
Appearing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Rhodes was asked if an AEW return was ever on the card. The American Nightmare responded that while there was no ill will towards AEW, he was always going to re-sign with WWE:
“No and it’s not in any way a negative towards them. I know I didn’t win the title at WrestleMania 39, but I was in the spot I always dreamed of, and I know how lucky I am to be in this spot.”
Later in the interview, Rhodes discussed the responsibility Nick Khan and Triple H bestowed upon him and how it is validating to be presented as the main event star in the company:
“They didn’t hand me the exact ball and said, ‘Hey, you’re the quarterback,’ but they certainly gave me a lot of responsibility, that being Nick, that being Hunter, I feel that would have been against my being because I was slotted there.”
Cody Rhodes Looks To Finish The Story
Winning the Royal Rumble for the second year in a row, Rhodes once again gets his opportunity to challenge Undisputed Champion Roman Reigns for the title. The match will close out WrestleMania weekend on April 7th.
