Former WWE Champion Cody Rhodes has addressed the fan backlash to the main event of WrestleMania 41.
Closing out the biggest show of the year, The American Nightmare lost the title to John Cena, and in the process marked the start of Cena’s record-breaking 17th World Championship reign. The match was not well-received by fans for a number of reasons. First, the quality of the match itself drew heavy criticism as the pace was very slow and not befitting of the biggest match on the company’s calendar.
Additionally, there was also the matter of how the match came to a close. Despite the fact that The Rock heavily factored into the build-up, including the John Cena heel turn, there was no sign of The Great One at the show. Instead, Travis Scott distracted Rhodes, allowing Cena to capitalise and win the match with a title shot while the referee was down.
With the lack of The Rock being a major point of contention, the Hollywood star appeared on Pat McAfee’s show a few days later and explained his absence, noting that he felt he was not needed for the story.
Cody Rhodes Speaks Out On WrestleMania Backlash Ahead Of SummerSlam
After winning the King of the Ring tournament at Night of Champions, Rhodes will get another opportunity at Cena and the title, this time at SummerSlam. During an appearance on Busted Open Radio, Rhodes spoke about the upcoming match and how some fans felt about his previous encounter with Cena:
“SummerSlam, I don’t wanna go as far as making any promises, but I can tell you the goal with SummerSlam is if people felt a certain way about WrestleMania, I will put that all on my back and take all the credit and responsibility for perhaps not feeling satisfied,” Rhodes said. “I’d like to get ‘em to the finish line with SummerSlam. Very much looking forward to doing this dance again.”
