CM Punk believes he is still at the top of the AEW division.
As seen on the July 29th episode of AEW Collision, Punk appeared in an in-ring segment with Tony Schiavone, once again carrying with him the mysterious red bag that has been seen since the debut episode of the Saturday night show.
Punk opened the bag to reveal what most had expected to be the contents, the AEW World Championship that Punk stated he never lost. The title was won at All Out 2022, but was stripped from Punk following the controversial events that took place after the pay-per-view.
Punk said that there are some things people did not want to talk about, beginning with the upcoming Wembley show. The unrecognised champion then turned his attention to Ricky Starks, who has pinned CM Punk on multiple occasions.
Following the reveal, Punk named himself the real champion, as no one has defeated him for the title. Punk then grabbed a can of black spray paint to draw an X on the title, symbolising CM Punk and what he stands for since 1997.
Starks interrupted the promo, referencing the victories that he has over Punk. The Owen Hart cup winner then demanded a title shot, which Punk was first against as he felt the referees were the cause of the defeats.
Punk eventually agreed to the match, providing there would be a special referee, which was later announced to be Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, with the title match announced for August 5th.
