CM Punk Admits If He Main Evented WrestleMania Before Leaving WWE He Wouldn't Have Returned

CM Punk has looked ahead to his WrestleMania main event match and how things could have changed if he got it in his first WWE run.

Punk is set to close WrestleMania 42 weekend when he puts his World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Reigns in the final match of night 2. Although Punk did main event WrestleMania 41 the previous year, some believe that the final match of night 1 is not as prestigious as being the headline match of night 2.

Punk, who infamously left WWE in 2014, went on to air his grievances of not being granted a WrestleMania main event, citing The Rock’s return as one of the reasons why he was never given the chance to compete in the biggest match on the company’s calendar. However, after returning to the promotion in late 2023, the Raw star is now set to be in the marquee position.

Speaking with WWE Now, Punk admitted that the Mania main event was a major factor in his decision to return, admitting that if he had headlined the show before his exit, there was a strong chance that he wouldn’t come back:

If you think about this, if I main evented WrestleMania before I left, I don’t think I would have come back, because I would have done it. What am I coming back for?

CM Punk Calls Out TKO, Pat McAfee & More On Road To WrestleMania

The other Mania main event, which will see Cody Rhodes defend his WWE Championship against Randy Orton, took a controversial return on the most recent episode of SmackDown. As Rhodes and Orton brawled, a returning Pat McAfee attacked Rhodes before cutting  apromo calling out the state of WWE and how it would be better if Orton was featured more.

On the following episode of Raw, Punk cut another Pipebomb where he tore into Reigns, The Rock, made references to TKO and called McAfee “Pat MAGAfee.” Punk also called for WrestleMania ticket prices to be lowered and celebrated with the fans.
