Bron Breakker has won his first championship on the main roster.
Victorious over Sami Zayn at SummerSlam, Breakker became the new Intercontinental Champion in front of a packed stadium in Cleveland, Ohio. The match itself saw Breakker attempt a spear right from the outset but Zayn avoided it to send Breakker crashing to the outside. With Zayn attempting a Helluva Kick early in the match, Breakker also moved. Following a back and forth where it appeared that Zayn had the match won, Breakker hit Zayn with a spear out of nowhere before hitting one more spear to win the title.
The victory marks the end of Zayn’s 119-day reign as champion after defeating Gunther at WrestleMania 40 to bring the record-breaking 666-day reign to an end. Breakker was also a firm favourite to win the match and the title going in due to the events that took place at the previous Premium Live Event.
Breakker joins the likes of Steve Austin and The British Bulldog as Superstars who have won their first Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam.
Bron Breakker Wins Rematch
Many assumed that Breakker’s first win would actually take place at Money in the Bank in Toronto, where the former NXT Champion first challenged for the gold. However, in one of the more shocking results that night, Zayn defeated Breaker clean to remain the champion for one month longer. Following the loss, Breakker has continually targeted Zayn with surprise attacks and defeated Ilja Dragunov to become the new number one contender.
