Big E Confirms WWE Retirement

Former WWE Champion Big E has officially entered retirement after 4 years out of the ring due to injury.

While making media appearances in the lead-up to the Super Bowl, Big E stated in an interview with Compas on the Beat on February 6 that while there is always the possibility of a comeback in pro wrestling, he does consider himself to be retired:

“I’m content. In wrestling, never say never, but right now I’m retired. That, for me, is it. I’m focused on other things right now.”

Following the interview, Big E put out a statement on social media regarding his career and his injuries, noting that he is not in any pain. The former World Champion also said that it has been “an immeasurable gift” to perform in front of the fans over the years:

I entered the pro wrestling industry at age 23 with an injury history that included a Torn Left ACL, Torn Right ACL, Torn Left Pec, and a Broken Right Patella. At 39, I’m well aware, that I will one day have to pay the piper. I’ve put my body through a lot. And somehow, I feel great. I don’t battle daily pain. I’m able to function normally and healthfully. I’m eternally grateful for the wonderful career I stumbled into. I pray for all of my fellow athletes and performers who have not had the same good fortune. A sincere thank you to everyone who has taken the time to follow my in-ring career. It was an immeasurable gift to get to perform for you all.

Big E Officially Announces Retirement

The former New Day member last competed in a match on SmackDown back in March 2022. Unfortunately, Big E suffered a broken neck in the match after taking an overhead suplex from Ridge Holland. Although many had hope to see Big E make a return to the ring, there has been no indication that it is on the cards. However, Big E has stated in interviews that he has been able to function normally since the accident and has a regular quality of life, but he is unable to get cleared to get back in the ring. It has also been stated in interviews that no ill will was held towards Holland after what happened and that it was unfortunately the risk of pro wrestling.

Although he is no longer able to get back in the ring, Big E remains a part of the company as part of the pre- and post-show panels. In a June 2025 interview, Big E spoke about his future as a broadcaster.
