Fans will have a clearer indication as to who WWE Champion Drew McIntyre will face at WrestleMania 42 very soon.
As Men’s Royal Rumble winner Roman Reigns chose World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk to be his opponent of choice at the biggest show of the year, McIntyre’s challenger will be decided by whoever is the last man standing inside the Elimination Chamber. The current lineup is set to see Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, Jey Uso, LA Knight, Trick Williams and Je’Von Evans battle it out inside the structure. Following an update the day before the show, it appears that one name is virtually guaranteed their place in Las Vegas.
As reported by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rhodes is said to be “a virtual lock” to be involved in the WWE Championship match at WrestleMania. While this would indicate that Rhodes will win the Men’s Chamber match on February 28, Meltzer has speculated that a third name could be added, such as Randy Orton, Jacob Fatu or Sami Zayn. However, Meltzer also adds that anything more than a triple threat is not currently being discussed. It should also be noted that ahead of the show, betting odds for Elimination Chamber have been released, giving fans an indication of how likely Rhodes is to win the match.
The report also notes that there has been frustration within the company as the original plans were ditched and the idea of Rhodes vs. McIntyre as a one-on-one match has been questioned as it is considered to be too predictable and both men have faced off numerous times over the past few months.
Drew McIntyre Set To Walk Into WrestleMania 42 As WWE Champion
Barring any last-minute title matches in the lead-up to the event, McIntyre looks set to finally enter WrestleMania as a top champion. Although the Scottish wrestler previously captured the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships in 2020 and 2024, respectively, this will be the first time that he will defend the gold on The Grandest Stage. McIntyre won the WWE Championship from Rhodes at the start of the year in a 3 stages of hell match in Germany.
