The Trick Williams era has begun on WWE NXT.
Taking place on the Spring Breakin’ special episode of NXT on April 23rd, Williams defeated Ilja Dragunov to become the new champion. Ahead of the match, the stipulation of the match was that if Williams failed to win the title he would be banished from NXT. With the 2024 WWE Draft taking place on April 26th, there was an air of unpredictability about the match.
With both men giving their best and Dragunov being slammed through the announce table, Williams looked to be out of it as Dragunov hit the H Bomb. However, Williams stayed alive and the crowd got behind the challenger. The ending of the match saw Williams hit the Trick Shot to win the match and the title to rapturous applause from the crowd.
The victory marks Williams’ first reign as NXT champion and his second title reign on the brand as he previously reigned as North American Champion. Williams has been on a meteoric rise ever since he was betrayed by Carmelo Hayes. With Williams defeating his former friend at Stand & Deliver and in a steel cage match a couple of weeks later, it was very much a matter of when and not if Williams would become the new champion.
Trick Williams Win Foreshadows WWE Draft
With NXT said to be heavily involved in the 2024 WWE Draft, some surprise picks were expected to take place across the two shows. With Ilja Dragunov declaring himself available for selection and no longer the champion, The Mad Dragon will very likely be called up to the main roster as part of the draft.
