Gunther Breaks WWE Record

Gunther Breaks WWE Record

Gunther is now officially the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history.

The Ring General’s reign now stands at 452 days, just 2 days shy of The Honky Tonk Man’s all-time record. As there will now be no more defences before that day, WWE have acknowledged that Gunther has broken the record.

The final challenger before the record was Chad Gable on the September 4th episode of Raw. Gable had already beat Gunther via count-out two weeks prior.

Gable took the fight to the champion, looking to make history of his own. The Alpha Academy member targeted the leg to try and neutralise the power game of Gunther.

Gable would lock in an ankle lock but Gunther would fight out of it. The match would end when Gable was dropped on his head, powerbombed and hit with a lariat to win the match and retain the title.
