Original WrestleMania Backlash Match Reportedly Never Planned

The originally planned match for the Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania Backlash was reportedly never going to happen at the event.

The initially announced match saw Raw Tag Team Champions RK-Bro face SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos. The winners would hold both titles with the championships being unified at WrestleMania Backlash.

However, during the broadcast of the April 29th episode of SmackDown, the contract signing segment descended into chaos. A brawl broke out between both teams, followed by an entrance by the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. The tribal chief would rip up the contract before being chased off by Drew McIntyre.

It was later announced that a six man tag would take at WrestleMania Backlash. Roman Reigns would team up with the Usos to take on RK-Bro and Drew McIntyre with no championships being defended in the match.

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter it is stated that “the six-man tag match was always the planned match. There was never a plan to do the unification match.” As to why WWE didn’t announce McIntyre vs. Reigns as a separate match, the report goes on to state that “the decision was made to save Reigns vs. McIntyre for the bigger summer shows.”

It is expected that Reigns vs. McIntyre for the championship will take place at either SummerSlam or the United Kingdom event Clash at the Castle, or possibly both.
