Multiple championship matches and more took place on the August 14 edition of WWE SmackDown in Boston, MA.
After winning the US Championship at SummerSlam, Baron Corbin defended the title for the first time on SmackDown. Corbin’s opponent is someone who has previously held the gold, Carmelo Hayes. Additionally, Women’s US Champion Tiffany Stratton put the title on the line against Jacy Jayne. The final title match saw R-Truth and Damian Priest put their Tag Team Championships on the line against The War Raiders and MFTs in a triple threat match.
After returning at SummerSlam and earning a WWE Championship match, Kevin Owens went face to face with CM Punk for the second straight week.
Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett were on commentary for the show.
WWE SmackDown Results August 14:
- Nick Aldis opened the show and was joined by Women’s Champion Chelsea Green. Aldis reluctantly asked Green to relinquish the title due to her broken orbital bone. Green refused and spoke about the sacrifices she made to make it to the top. Aldis then said that Green had 30 days to defend her title or she would be stripped of the championship. Gunther protested the decision, leading to Matt Cardona coming out to defend his wife.
- Gunther defeated Matt Cardona. After the match, Nia Jax and Lash Legend hit the ring. Jax said she was looking at going after the championship. Tiffany Stratton arrived before Jax and Legend could do further damage to Green.
- Tatum Paxley met with Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss backstage, showing a shrine she had built to the former Women’s Tag Champions. Flair and Bliss seemed reluctant to team with Paxley, for now.
- Backstage, Cody Rhodes demanded things be settled with Randy Orton. Nick Aldis suggested Sunday Night’s Main Event as the location.
- Baron Corbin defeated Carmelo Hayes to retain the US Championship. Trick Williams and Lil Yachty attacked Corbin after the bell.
- CM Punk and Kevin Owens traded insults. There were references to their time on the indies 20 years ago. The battle of insults concluded with The Prizefighter claiming he will beat Punk’s “bitch ass” next week, while the champion vowed to put Owens’ “fat ass” to sleep.
- The MFTs defeated R-Truth & Damian Priest & The War Raiders to become the new WWE Tag Team Champions.
- Jacy Jayne defeated Tiffany Stratton to become the new Women’s US Champion.
- Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes brawled to close out the show.
