A further update has been provided on the decision to have John Cena host WrestleMania 42.
In late March, Cena was officially announced as the host for the 2026 event in Las Vegas. As reported by WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, the decision to have the Hollywood star make his return at Mania was not always the plan. The report notes that Cena agreed to the plans in February and that he had also signed a long-term non-wrestling deal with WWE.
As many fans had expected, the announcement was made to increase ticket sales for the event. Previous reports have indicated that Mania 42 is not selling as well as the company had hoped for.
Analysis – John Cena As WrestleMania Host
It’s no surprise that Cena has been used as a break glass in case of emergency scenario for WrestleMania. With the company returning to the same city for the second year in a row, ticket prices climbing even higher than before and overall interest in WWE down compared to the past couple of years, the company will be doing everything possible to ensure that there will be significant growth compared to the 2025 event.
Some fans have claimed to be angry at the move online, but this will not be Cena returning to have a match. Instead, Cena will likely appear in the opening segment to hype the crowd ahead of the first match, and may also be the one to announce the weekend attendance figure. Whether Cena gets physical or not is another matter. Granted Cena could hit an undercard heel with an AA, but unless another rising star is standing alongside the WWE legend at this point, the angle won’t lead to anything in the long term.
