Vince McMahon made the call to have one of the biggest matches at WrestleMania 39 change the finish, a decision that many believe to be the wrong one 2 years later.
Although McMahon had originally retired from WWE back in the summer of 2022, the former Chairman made his return to the company at the start of 2023 to oversee the sale of WWE, which was later sold to the Endeavor group the night after WrestleMania 39. During his return, McMahon also interfered with creative decisions that were made by Triple H and the senior team. According to a new report, one of these changes took place at the biggest show of the year.
Vince McMahon Changed WrestleMania Match
One of the biggest matches on the card saw Edge [now known as Cope in AEW] face “The Demon” Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell. Along with the match being remembered for Balor being busted open and causing the bout to be paused, many have called out the result in the years that followed as Edge was the victor in a match that would have greatly benefited Balor much more.
As reported by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, the original plan was for Balor to win the match but McMahon wanted Edge to be victorious, even though the Hall of Famer pushed back on the decision. Fightful adds that they were unsure whether the stars were informed of the original plans as they are generally relayed on the day of the show.
It was noted months ago that McMahon was responsible for a math change on the show, leading to heavy speculation that the match in question was Cody Rhodes losing to Roman Reigns considering the backlash that was created at that time. Fightful noted that while McMahon was in favour of this, the Rhodes loss was always the plan.
The report ends by discussing the disastrous Raw after Mania 39, where one source “compared McMahon to the Tazmanian Devil, running in, eating up the script, ruining the show and leaving.”
