Shelton Benjamin is very appreciative of the response from the AEW fans regarding his recent run of matches in the Continental Classic.
Although Benjamin has been in the industry for more than 20 years, the veteran has not lost a step and quickly reminded the fans that he can still perform at a high level in his AEW debut match against Lio Rush. When Benjamin was announced as a competitor in the 2024 Continental Classic Tournament, fans once again expected a run of solid matches, especially since the AEW star had previously competed in the NJPW G1 Tournament 3 times.
Having already faced off against Mark Briscoe, Daniel Garcia, The Beast Mortos and Kyle Fletcher, Benjamin’s matches have been incredibly well-received by the fans. While many expected the matches to be great, all 4 of the Continental Classic matches have also been first-time-ever singles matches. With a match against Kazuchika Okada set to round out the group stages of the tournament, Benjamin has far exceeded all expectations.
“I’ve Been Having Nothing But Great Matches”: Shelton Benjamin
Speaking with Kenny McIntosh for Inside The Ropes Magazine, Benjamin admitted that he was surprised that the fans were so complimentary of his matches:
“My biggest surprise is that the fans really appreciate what I bring to the table. I found that I have a lot of great chemistry with the guys I’ve been working. I feel like I’ve been having nothing but just great matches with pretty much everyone I’ve been in the ring with.”
Benjamin also stated that despite the sheer talent depth of the AEW roster he was still surprised by his own consistency:
“Just the fact that I’ve been able to gel so well with guys who I never have worked with before and put on great performances, that has been the biggest surprise to me. It shouldn’t be, because again, these are some of the best athletes in the world, some of the best professional wrestlers in the world. But it’s definitely a pleasant surprise.”
