Sami Zayn believes there was an argument for him to be the one to dethrone Roman Reigns back in 2023.
At the 2023 Royal Rumble, Cody Rhodes won the men’s match prior to the main event, which saw Roman Reigns defend the Undisputed Championship against Kevin Owens. Following the match, Zayn finally snapped after being pushed around by Reigns for months.
Hitting Reigns in the back with a steel chair, the fans erupted at what took place. Shortly afterwards, it was confirmed that Zayn would challenge Reigns for the title in Zayn’s hometown of Montreal. Although the storylines appeared to have Reigns vs. Rhodes as the Mania match, Zayn’s involvement made a strong case for the Honorary Uce to be the one to bring Reigns’ lengthy reign to an end.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Zayn was asked if he thought he should have won that night. The WWE Champion responded that while there was a case to be made for it, it is all hypothetical. Zayn also noted that Rhodes was a firm fan favourite at this time too:
“At the time, I thought there was a case to be made for it, but going back to the domino effect thing, I don’t know. I really don’t know. I don’t think it’s ludicrous to say I should have. If you were watching at that time, I think anybody could have made that argument. But it was just again timing, and Cody was also red hot at that time, and they were building to something. Then it leads to Cody the next year, and then it’s more gratifying. Whatever it is, just yeah, I don’t know. Could, should, would- would it have worked? I think so. But who’s to say?”
Reigns defeated Zayn at Elimination Chamber and Rhodes at WrestleMania 39. The following year, Reigns was defeated by Rhodes in the Bloodline Rules match.
Sami Zayn Set To Clash With Roman Reigns Once More
