Roman Reigns Dismisses WWE WrestleMania 40 Opponent Drama: "I’m the Main Event No Matter What"

Roman Reigns has admitted that he had no preference over who his opponent was going to be at WrestleMania 40.

In January 2024, the rematch between Reigns and Cody Rhodes appeared to be set as The American Nightmare had won the Royal Rumble for the second year in a row. However, with Rhodes relinquishing his WrestleMania spot to The Rock just 6 days later, the main event of Mania 40 was thrown into turmoil with fan backlash over the creative decision.

Eventually, WWE pivoted and named Cody Rhodes the number one contender, which has since been acknowledged by numerous sources in WWE as part of the Behind The Curtain documenetary. However, amidst all the chaos, did Reigns have a preference over who his opponent was going to be?

Speaking with Jimmy Traina of Sports Illustrated, Reigns stated that it was irrelevant who his opponent was for the show as he was the one that everyone wanted to face, adding that all that mattered what that he was in the main event of the show:

“It didn’t matter to me. I was the main event no matter what. I’m the guy that everyone wanted to dance with. I’m the hot chick. Everybody wanted to take me out. It was one of those things where, we just need to get there and defend this thing. It doesn’t matter who it is, they’re trying to stop history from happening. They’re trying to take this off of the pinnacle right now. It was the same task at hand for me,”

Roman Reigns Addresses WWE Netflix Premiere

January 6th will be a major day in wrestling as WWE Raw will debut on Netflix to officially kick off a new era for the red brand. Reigns has been confirmed for the show among many top stars. When asked about what happens next, Reigns admitted he was not entirely sure:

“I’m not exactly sure. I’m just trying to get to the premiere. I’m on the premiere. I don’t think I can share too much more than that at this point. We haven’t scheduled my exact dates for going into WrestleMania from Rumble forward, but that is definitely a topic that has to be addressed. It’s an understandable one for the impact, the amount of money that is part of this deal. I completely understand. These are all great problems to have. Nobody loves being in the tug of war more than me. It usually works out pretty good.”
