Former WWE Champion Jinder Mahal, now known as Raj Dhesi, has announced a new project focused on helping wrestlers prepare for life outside of the squared circle.
Taking to his Instagram page, Dhesi uploaded a reel where he outlined his latest project, which is predominantly aimed at wrestlers living in the United States, but the methods can be applied to other professionals. Dhesi stated in the video that independent contractors are the ones responsible for setting up for their own retirement, and went on to outline the differences between the Roth IRA and Solo 401(k) methods:
“Starting a series on finances for wrestlers, but the principles apply to anyone.
“It’s an area that’s often overlooked, whether you’re contracted (WWE, AEW, TNA…) or if you are an independent wrestler. As independent contractors, we’re responsible for setting up and funding our own retirement.
“This applies to US-based wrestlers — if you’re international, take a look at what retirement options are available in your country.
“Two retirement account options worth understanding:
“Roth IRA — funded with after-tax dollars. The benefit is tax-free growth and tax-free withdrawals in retirement. There are annual contribution limits, and income limits apply, meaning higher earners may not be able to contribute directly.
“Solo 401(k) — contributions can be made with pre-tax income, reducing your taxable income today, while the funds grow tax-deferred until withdrawal. Contribution limits are significantly higher than a Roth IRA, allowing for more aggressive retirement savings.
“You don’t have to choose just one — both can work together.
“Speak to an investment professional.”
No further information has been provided on when follow-up videos will be released, or whether this could be expanded onto YouTube, where fellow former WWE stars such as Stevie Richards and Maven have gained sizeable followings with their respective channels.
Best known for his time as Jinder Mahal, Dhesi captured the WWE Championship in 2017 after defeating Randy Orton at Backlash. Mahal held the championship for 170 days before dropping the title to AJ Styles on an episode of SmackDown that took place in Manchester, England.
Raj Dhesi Still Wrestling Following WWE Exit
Following his second release in April 2024, Dhesi has been active on the independent scene, having competed in 45 matches at the time of writing. Along with matches in the revived Maple Leaf Pro promotion in Canada and previous matches with the likes of current TNA World Champion Mike Santana and Matt Cardona, Dhesi previously held the AAA World Tag Team Championships with Satnam Singh.
