Legendary WWE announcer Michael Cole has elaborated on why a member of the Raw roster is on another level when it comes to in-ring work.
Having called the action in WWE for the best part of 3 decades, Cole has seen some of the all-time greats compete inside the squared circle during his legendary career. When it comes to the current era, the Raw announcer is a huge fan of someone who has dominated ever since his arrival, Gunther.
Focused on a more old-school style as opposed to flashy moves and high dives, The Ring General is renowned for his strong strikes and sleeper holds that have led to him retiring legends and winning the top championships in the company. While appearing on The Sal Licata Show, Cole stated that Gunther is currently the best wrestler in the world:
“Let me answer it this way,” Cole said. “There’s a gentleman in our business right now who, every time he wrestles a match, I get goosebumps. I love to call the match. I believe he is the best professional wrestler on the planet today, that is Gunther.
WWE Announcer Michael Cole Continues Praise On “Career Killer” Gunther
Ahead of Raw airing live from Madison Square Garden in New York on March 30, Cole spoke about Gunther in the Garden feeling natural. The announcer also compared Gunther to some of the major names who have a history with MSG:
“There’s such a mix on him. The people either hate him or they love him. He is such an old-school throwback. And you talk, we’re going to be at the Garden for Raw this coming Monday, road to WrestleMania a couple of weeks away. If there’s ever a place for Gunther to be, it’s the Garden. You think back to the Bruno Sammartinos, the Ivan Putskis, the Superstar Billy Grahams, and some of these all-time greats.
“Gunther, who we call the Career Killer now, because he did end the careers of Goldberg, Cena, and AJ Styles. He is an artist. He is incredible to watch in the ring, and it is such a different way to express our business, the way that he does it. So Gunther, right now, to me: best on the planet. Love calling his matches.”
At the time of writing, Gunther has not yet confirmed his match for WrestleMania 42. With it appearing that the former World Champion will be live on Raw, this could change on the next episode of the show. At WrestleMania 41, Gunther lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Royal Rumble winner Jey Uso in the opening match of the weekend.
