Horror movie icon Leatherface is the latest surprise appearance in AEW.
As part of the latest sponsorship integration in wrestling, the August 16th Fight For The Fallen episode of Dynamite featured a Texas Chainsaw Massacre Deathmatch sponsored by the videogame based on the movie franchise. The two competitors in the match were wrestling veterans Jeff Hardy and Jeff Jarrett.
With AEW having a history of ultraviolent matches and more graphic content than other mainstream shows, hopes were high as to what would happen in the no rules match.
The result was not good.
Before all the negatives of this encounter will be listed, there was one overwhelming positive to all of this. The special episode of Dynamite raised money for charity, with all money raised being sent to those affected by the Maui wildfires. With the videogame markers reportedly paying $100,000 in sponsorship fees, the donation will be a great help. With that being said, onto the match…
Weapons were seen in the ring and Announcer Justin Roberts introduced Hardy, who then walked to the back to start the brawl with Jarrett. What followed was a slow sequence of events that featured multiple interference spots and backstage brawling in dark rooms, leaving it difficult for both fans at home to see and fans in the arena who had to watch the majority of the contest on the big screen.
Mercifully, the action finally made its way to the ring, where Hardy hit a Swanton Bomb onto Jarrett through a table, the only part that resembled entertainment in the stretched-out encounter.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, a chainsaw sound effect rang through the arena speakers and Leatherface came out to scare Jeff Jarrett’s wife Karen to the back. Obviously there could be no lacerations or amputations, but a guitar or table could have been sawed through to at least make it look threatening.
Jarrett won the match after further interference, and also won a championship for his troubles that will likely be never seen again.
Ever since the Mountain Dew Pitch Black Match at the Royal Rumble, it looked like the worst match of the year had already been decided in January. However, it looks like there is now a new contender.
