Finding success in WWE, AEW and New Japan, Jon Moxley has made a name for himself in wrestling all around the world.

Moxley quickly built a reputation in extreme promotions such as Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW). Intense, chaotic, and often brutal, Moxley embraced the hardcore style with barbed wire, steel chairs, and violent stipulations. Mox often portrayed antiheroes or deeply conflicted figures, blurring the lines between villain and fan favourite. This complexity helped him stand apart in a crowded independent scene and caught the attention of major wrestling companies.
In 2011, he signed with WWE and was rebranded as Dean Ambrose. His breakout came in 2012 as a member of The Shield, alongside Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. The trio debuted as a dominant, unified force, quickly becoming one of the most impactful factions in modern wrestling.
As Dean Ambrose, he played the role of the unhinged, volatile member of the group, “The Lunatic Fringe.” His erratic behaviour, intense promos, and physical in-ring style made him a standout even among his talented partners. The Shield’s success propelled all three members into stardom, and after the group’s eventual breakup, Ambrose transitioned into a singles career with considerable momentum.
During his WWE tenure, Ambrose captured multiple championships, including the WWE Championship, Intercontinental Championship, and United States Championship. His 2016 WWE Championship win marked a career high point, solidifying him as a top-tier performer.
Despite his success, Moxley later expressed frustration with the creative direction of his character in WWE. He felt constrained by scripted promos and a presentation that didn’t fully align with his vision. In 2019, after his contract expired, he made the pivotal decision to leave the company. On his way out, Moxley turned heel and portrayed a germophobe, one of the lower points of his career.
Shortly after his departure, he reemerged under his original ring name, Jon Moxley, and debuted in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) at the company’s inaugural Double or Nothing event, which was a defining moment. Appearing unannounced, Moxley attacked Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega to instantly establish himself as a main event player in the promotion.
In AEW, Moxley found the creative freedom he had been seeking. His character became more grounded, intense, and authentic. In 2020, he won the AEW World Championship from Chris Jericho. Multiple reigns with the World Title followed, along with spells as International and Continental Champion. In 2023, Moxley started a new faction, The Deathriders, which had a stranglehold on the World Championship.
Beyond AEW, Moxley has continued to work with other promotions, including New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he captured the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Moxley is the only wrestler to hold the top prize in WWE, NJPW and AEW.
