Jon Moxley may have retained the AEW World Championship on Dynamite but he was also on the receiving end of one of the most graphic spots in wrestling history, even by AEW standards.
In a rematch from Revolution, Moxley put the World Title on the line against Cope in a street fight on the March 19th episode of Dynamite. With Mox known for violent spots in his matches, fans expected bloodshed and some hard-to-watch moments, but happened in the match was a shock to many fans.
On top of tables and chairs used, Cope’s nail-filled 2×4 spike came into play. After first being struck in the midsection by Spike, Moxley then took another shot to the back and finally a suplex onto the weapon. The nails remained in the World Champion’s back for an uncomfortable amount of time as the referee and Wheeler Yuta tried to free Mox from Spike being lodged into his back. Commentary was also uncomfortable with the spot with Taz stating he felt ill. The referee finally got Mox free of the spot as the match continued.
With The Death Riders interfering in the match, Moxley eventually won by coking out Cope to retain the title.
Over the course of the promotion’s history, AEW has been often criticised for the dangerous and unsafe spots. Unsurprisingly, many voiced their opinions online over what took place.
Jon Moxley Continues World Title Reign
Moxley defeated Bryan Danielson at WrestleDream back in October 2024 to win the World Championship for a 4th time and in the process retire The American Dragon. Moxley has held the championship for 158 days and counting.
