John Cena is extremely thankful for the work of a long-time rival.
Over the course of his 20-plus-year WWE career, Cena has feuded with some of the biggest names in professional wrestling. From Kurt Angle in his SmackDown, Triple H, Randy Orton and CM Punk have all had notable rivalries with the 16-time World Champion. In 2006, Cena was heavily involved in a rivalry with Edge.
Beginning at New Year’s Revolution, The Rated R Superstar cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to steal the WWE Championship from Cena. The two legends would battle over the title for the rest of the year, including Edge costing Cena in his match with RVD at One Night Stand 2006.
The rivalry would be settled at Unforgiven 2006 in Edge’s speciality match; the TLC match. To further stack the deck against Cena, the match would take place in Edge’s hometown of Toronto.
“He Has Such A Great Mind For The Business” – John Cena
Looking back on the match on his TikTok account, Cena noted how Edge was the mastermind behind making the match so great and kept the match very safe despite the many high-risk moves:
“This is Unforgiven in Toronto, Canada vs. Edge. I have a wonderful legacy with Edge, we did a lot of stuff together. Here we are destroying the entire ring and its surroundings. A lot of this is the brainchild of Adam Copeland. He has such a great mind for the business, including me giving an Attitude Adjustment to a temperamental ladder and the fist drop off the ladder instead of jumping for the championship. He came up with a lot of this stuff because I would never be that reckless. But I always felt safe with Edge in there as I take a trip through the table, and that’s a horrible landing for me!
We destroyed a whole lot of stuff but the crowd was raucous. They really loved their hometown hero! Edge in Toronto blue. An Attitude Adjustment off the top of a ladder through two tables was enough to get it done for the WWE Championship. I had a few fans in the crowd that night, one was my dad, who was I able to give a hug after I made it through in one piece.”
Having been in the WWE for more than 20 years, John Cena recently hinted at retirement.
