Jacob Fatu failed to defeat Roman Reigns at WWE Backlash, but it was The Samoan Werewolf who stood tall when all was said and done.
The main event of the May 9 show saw Fatu look to capture his first World Championship in WWE. A dominant force from the outset, Fatu kicked out of Reigns’ big moves and nearly had the match won multiple times, but The OTC survived. The end of the match saw Fatu try to lock in the Tongan death grip, but Reigns drove Fatu into the exposed turnbuckle. Reigns followed up with a spear to win the match and retain the title.
After the bell, Fatu launched an attack on Reigns. The referee attempted to stop Fatu, but was taken out with a Samoan drop. More officials attempted to intervene, but were also caught in Fatu’s crossfire. Fatu locked in the Togan death grip before exiting the ring and making his way up the ramp. Returning to the ring, Fatu held the World Heavyweight Championship up in the air as the show went off the air.
Interestingly, neither The Usos nor Solo Sikoa and The MFTs made appearances on the show. In the lead-up to the match, Fatu warned The Usos that he would burn the family tree down if he did not walk out of Backlash as the champion.
Jacob Fatu Not Done With Roman Reigns
Fatu made it clear on the Raw after WrestleMania 42 that he wanted the World Title. Seeing all the success Reigns had as champion, The Samoan Werewolf demanded an opportunity at the gold, locking in the Togan death grip on Reigns multiple times in the build-up.
