Cody Rhodes has reflected on capturing the WWE Title for a second time and how he is viewing his second time with the championship differently.
Back at SummerSlam, Rhodes pinned John Cena in a critically acclaimed street fight to win back the championship he lost to Cena at WrestleMania 41, ending the record-breaking reign in the process.
Now that Rhodes is the champion again, how will the second reign differ from the first. While speaking with ESPN ahead of his next title defence, Rhodes noted that he wants to enjoy things more the second time around, while also referencing the birth of his second daughter:
“I think this time around, I’m really just trying to enjoy it. I mean, I spent — no matter how you look at our industry, the suspension of disbelief — I spent my whole career chasing this one. And to get it the first time, it just felt like such pressure was on,” Rhodes said. “Now it’s just a good season of my life. Just had baby girl number two. The title in hand. I just want to enjoy it. Just have a good time. You know, let’s just all have a good time.”
Rhodes will next put the championship on the line against Drew McIntyre at Wrestlepalooza on September 20.
When Did Cody Rhodes First Capture The WWE Title?
After coming up short against Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39, The American Nightmare took on the Tribal Chief once more the following year, this time in the chaotic Bloodline Rules match that saw run-ins from the likes of The Rock, John Cena and The Undertaker. When all was said and done, Cody Rhodes finally finished the story by pinning Reigns to capture the championship for the first time in his career.
Ahead of the match, The Rock and Reigns both attempted to block Rhodes from having the match, as they wanted to face each other on The Grandest Stage. This led to Rock and Reigns taking on Rhodes and Seth Rollins in what was Rock’s first Mania match since 2013.
