Gunther is now the first two-time World Heavyweight Champion following his latest victory.
Competing in the main event of the June 9th episode of WWE Raw, The Ring General defeated Jey Uso to win back the title he lost at WrestleMania 41. The closing moments of the match saw both men trade sleeper holds, but ultimately, Uso passed out to give Gunther the victory.
The story heading into the match was that Uso had been worn down by his matches at Saturday Night’s Main Event and Money in the Bank but Gunther was fresh. Despite what many predicted, there was no cash in by Seth Rollins in the match and there was no interference at all.
The victory brings to an end Uso’s reign at 52 days. Uso previously defended the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins and Logan Paul before the loss to The Ring General.
When Did Gunther First Win The World Title?
After losing the Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40, Gunther made the transition to the main event scene. After defeating Randy Orton in the final of the King of the Ring tournament, the Austrian star defeated Damian Priest at SummerSlam to win the title for the first time in his career.
