NJPW star Gabe Kidd was unable to compete in his second match in the G1 Climax 35 tournament due to injury.
The Nottingham wrestler competed in his first match in the round robin tournament on July 19 with a defeat to AEW star Konosuke Takeshita in Block B. The next night, Kidd was set to take on reigning IWGP World Champion Zack Sabre Jr., but revealed that he was not cleared to compete. Appearing in the ring on crutches, Kidd stated that he had hyperextended his knee in the match with Takeshita.
In what appears to be a more positive update, Kidd added that he would not be withdrawing from the tournament yet, hopefully indicating that the injury is not too severe and he can continue to participate soon. However, at the time of writing, the severity of the injury remains unknown and it is uncertain when or if Kidd will be back in action as part of the G1 Climax 35 Tournament.
Kidd was next set to be in action on July 23 in a match against Shingo Takagi.
This is the second alteration to the 2025 tournament after former IWGP World Champion Hirooki Goto also withdrew due to injury concerns.
NJPW Star Gabe Kidd Previously Competed In AEW
The reigning IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion has been prominently seen on AEW TV over the past few months to assist The Deathriders. On top of providing assistance to the heel faction as part of the Anarchy in the Arena match at Double or Nothing, Kidd also teamed with Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta at All In: Texas to unsuccessfully challenge The Opps for the Trios Championships. After the match, Kidd, Yuta and Castagnoli attacked Samoa Joe, forcing the former World Champion to leave on a stretcher.
