Former WWE Star Joe Hennig [Curtis Axel] Arrested On DUI Charges

Joe Hennig, best known for his time in WWE as the pro wrestler Curtis Axel, has been arrested in Minnesota.

The arrest occurred in Anoka County, MI on May 18. Hennig was arrested under the following charges:

DUI, listed as Third-Degree Driving While Impaired, refusal to submit to chemical test (Breath or test refusal or failure), Obstructing the Legal Process-Lawful Execution Legal Process, having an open bottle of alcohol in his car and failure to stop after an accident to property that did not involve injury.’

Court records indicate that the former Intercontinental Champion, 46, was released from jail on May 19. Per the criminal complaint, the incident occurred at approximately 8:47 pm when officers were dispatched to a McDonald’s on Saint Francis Boulevard Northwest. The officers reportedly found a truck driven by Hennig “slowly navigating” the parking premises.

When an officer stopped the vehicle, a strong odour of alcohol was detected, along with Hennig “allegedly exhibiting bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech.” The former WWE pro wrestler allegedly refused to exit the vehicle, so was physically removed from his truck and handcuffed.

An employee of the affected McDonald’s reported that Hennig was mumbling in the drive-thru before moving to the window, swearing at staff and backing into another vehicle. An inventory search of his vehicle before towing reportedly found a 750 mL open bottle of Phillips vodka on the front passenger-side floorboard.

A third-generation pro wrestler, Hennig is the son of “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig and the grandson of wrestling legend Larry “The Axe” Hennig. First signing with WWE back in 2007, Hennig first reported to developmental before being a part of the second season of NXT as Michael McGillicutty. Later joining the Nexus faction, Hennig went on to return to NXT before winning the Intercontinental Championship and was briefly managed by Paul Heyman.

Hennig’s final stint in the company saw him in comedy roles and jobber teams before his release in 2020. Hennig has competed in one match since his exit.

This is the second pro wrestler arrest in recent weeks, as Ludwig Kaiser was arrested in Florida on battery charges.
