AJ Lee Makes WWE Return On SmackDown

AJ Lee Makes WWE Return On SmackDown

The rumours were indeed true as AJ Lee made her first live WWE appearance in over a decade on the latest episode of SmackDown.

The former Divas champion made her surprise return on the September 5 episode of the show, providing back-up for her husband CM Punk following another barrage of insults from Becky Lynch. The main event segment of the show saw Seth Rollins introduce his Lynch to the fans, who called out CM Punk. As Lynch became confrontational with Punk for the third time in a week, Punk exited the ring and said he would never put his hands on a lady, but knew someone who would.

Lee’s “Light It Up” theme then played to a thunderous ovation from the live fans and Lee skipped to and around the ring. The former Divas Champion then confronted Lynch, taking her down with a Thesz press, and sent her out of the ring with a slap. Punk and Lee hugged as the show came to a close. Lee was also seen grabbing Lynch’s Women’s Intercontinental Championship, potentially setting up a match between the two down the road.

AJ Lee WWE Return On SmackDown Likely Sets Up Wrestlepalooza Match

Following the events that have transpired over the past 7 dyas, which has seen Lynch cost Punk his match for the WOrld Title at Clash in Paris, the war of word between the two and the AJ Lee return, all signs are pointing to a mixed tag match set to take place at Wrestlepalooza on September 20, which will be the first Premium Live Event to air in the States on the new ESPN streaming service as part of the new media rights agreement between both sides.

Lee’s appearance on WWE TV was her first in over 10 years, with the wrestler choosing to retire from in-ring competition shortly after WrestleMania 31 due to neck issues. Lee’s return was heavily expected following teases on WWE TV and Punk making it clear he would be at SmackDown in Chicago.
