Who Will Face Drew McIntyre For The WWE Championship At Royal Rumble?

WWE Champion Drew McIntyre now knows who he will face at the Royal Rumble with the title on the line.

The main event of the January 24 Saturday Night’s Main Event special saw Sami Zayn, Trick Williams, Randy Orton and Damian Priest battle it out to determine who would be first in line to face The Scottish Warrior.

The closing moments of the match saw Priest hit a Razor’s Edge onto Zayn before turning his attention to Williams. Zayn recovered and hit Priest with the Helluva kick to win the match. Orton tried to break up the pin, but could not make it in time before the referee counted the pin.

After the match, McIntyre tried to attack Zayn, but the new number one contender stood tall. Pyro went off in the arena as Zayn celebrated to bring the show to a close.

The 4 men in the main event all earned the right to fight to be the number one contender after winning their respective qualifying matches the previous week on SmackDown. Orton defeated The Miz, Trick Williams defeated Matt Cardona, Damian Priest defeated Solo Sikoa, and Zayn defeated Ilja Dragunov.

Drew McIntyre To Have First Televised WWE Championship Defence At Royal Rumble

McIntyre won the WWE Championship on the January 9 episode of SmackDown by defeating Cody Rhodes in a 3 Stages of Hell match. The final fall, which took place inside a steel cage, saw Jacob Fatu interfere and attack both Rhodes and McIntyre. With Fatu distracted, McIntyre made his way out of the cage to win the match and the title.

While McIntyre has defended his championship at non-televised events as part of the European tour, his match against Zayn at the Rumble on January 31 will be the first time he puts the title on the line with the world watching.
