Tony Khan Provides Update On AEW Introducing New Championships

Tony Khan has seemingly confirmed that a new AEW championship is on the way soon, but previous injuries derailed the plans and caused a delay.

In previous years, All Elite Wrestling came under criticism for the number of championship belts seen on weekly TV. Along with the core titles from AEW itself, the champions from ROH and international promotions regularly defended their titles on the show, watering down the importance of those holding AEW-branded championships.

While the focus has shifted to a more minimised approach with the International and Continental Championships being held by Kazuchika Okada only following All In: Texas and other promotions being featured less, there have been calls for AEW to follow TNA and WWE by introducing Women’s Tag Team Championships. According to Khan, it is now a case of when and not if they will make their way onscreen.

Tony Khan Explains Why AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship Are Not On TV

While speaking with Iridian Firrero of WrestfriendsKhan confirmed that they have been made:

“I have the belts. I made the belts. They exist.” Khan said. “But I will put them into play when we are able to put the very best roster forward.”

Explaining the reason for the delay, Khan spoke about the division being hit with injuries, specifically following the Women’s Casino Gauntlet match:

“I have a bunch of people I would like to get involved in a women’s tag team tournament potentially. There has been so much injury in the women’s division and as the person who put together the women’s casino gauntlet, I wish that we had come out of it healthier. A quarter of the people in the match got knocked out of the match and out of action indefinitely.”

“I do want to get the division healthy because if I tried to do it right now, I would be missing a lot of the people and I could do the tournament, but then I wouldn’t be able to have a healthy singles division at the same time,”
