An update on Matt Cardona, also known as Zack Ryder, has been provided following the former WWE star’s surprise appearance on SmackDown.
Ryder was revealed to be the mystery opponent for LA Knight on the November 14 edition of SmackDown as part of the tournament to determine who will be John Cena’s final opponent on December 13, in what was also his first main roster match in over 5 years. Although Ryder received a great reception from the crowd, the former Intercontinental Champion was unable to advance and as Knight picked up the victory.
Following the appearance, new Ryder merchandise appeared on WWE Shop, sparking speculation that the Long Island wrestler may have re-signed with the company. However, in an update from Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, the Cardona appearance was a one-off for now, and he has not signed a new deal. However, company sources did confirm that there was a new merchandising deal, but were unable to elaborate on why Cardona returned as Zack Ryder.
Matt Cardona Was First Surprise In WWE Tournament
When The Last Time Is Now Tournament was first announced, John Cena stated that stars from Raw, SmackDown, NXT and “some names that don’t work here” would all be competing to be his final opponent. With Ryder being revealed as the first surprise name, the next mystery entrant will be revealed on the November 17 Raw, as Solo Sikoa will be in action against an opponent to be revealed on the show.
