Sting Reflects On Elusive Dream Match With The Undertaker In WWE: A Missed Opportunity in Wrestling History

Sting has talked about the dream match that fans never got to see.

Along with his legendary careers in WCW, TNA and AEW, the Hall of Famer had a brief run in WWE. Debuting at Survivor Series 2014 to help Team Cena defeat The Authority, Sting would go on to face Triple H at WrestleMania 31, losing his debut match in a move that was heavily criticised.

A few months later Sting would compete in his final WWE match after unsuccessfully challenging Seth Rollins for the WWE Championship. Due to an accident from a Buckle Bomb, Sting suffered a back injury that would ultimately cause him to announce his retirement when inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. Unfortunately, this meant that despite briefly being in WWE, the long-awaited match with The Undertaker never transpired. With Sting being the flagbearer for WCW and The Undertaker being a loyal mainstay to WWE, this will always be one of the greatest what-ifs in professional wrestling.

Ahead of his retirement at AEW Revolution, Sting was asked about the dream match by CBS Sports. The Icon stated that it had the potential to be an all-time classic but was never on the cards. Additionally, the Hall of Famer admitted that he was hopeful that the Seth Rollins match would lead to a showdown with The Deadman:

“I think if it was done right, it could have been a night, for sure, everyone would remember and never forget. They would be talking about it to this day. But it just was not going to happen. I thought, ‘Well, maybe if I get my foot in the door, we’ll see what happens.’ So I got my foot in the door. We did a WrestleMania with Triple H and then Vince [Vince McMahon] called and said, ‘Hey, I want you to have a world title match with Seth. Would you be willing to do that?’ ‘Yeah, I’d be willing to do that.’ Still, in hopes that somehow I could get in there with Taker.”

“I had so many ideas over the years. A lot of times, smoke and mirrors aren’t good things. But in our situation, I think with his gimmick and the mystiques of his character and mine, we couldn’t have enough smoke and mirrors. I think it definitely would have been a night that people remembered. Man, I would have loved to have seen that. If I could have had that match alone, I would have been great. I wouldn’t have had to do anything else.”

Sting Addresses AEW Fans

February 28th saw the Hall of Famer make his final appearance as an active performer on AEW Dynamite. Descending from the rafters in the main event, The Icon stood tall as the show went off the air. When the cameras stopped rolling, Sting cut a promo for the fans in attendance.
