WWE NXT has a new champion, and his name is Joe Hendry.
On the February 3 edition of the Tuesday night show, Hendry emerged victorious over Dion Lennox, Jackson Drake, Keanu Carver, Ricky Saints, Sean Legacy and Shiloh Hill to capture the top prize on the brand. The finish of the match saw Hendry and Saints on top of the ladder, fighting for the gold. Hendry hit Saints with the gold, sending the former NXT Champion through a ladder to allow Hendry to unhook the championship, earning the accolade for the first time in his career. Saints previously looked to have a clear path, but took too long getting up the ladder to allow Hendry to capitalise.
Henry was not originally a part of the match as he was taken out before his qualifier by Vanity Project. However, the ow former General Manager Ava made the call that if Hendry could get cleared in time, he would also be added to the ladder match.
Along with being a new NXT Champion, Hendry is also a former TNA World Champion and made multiple appearances on NXT and main roster shows while reigning with TNA’s top prize.
New WWE NXT Champion Crowned After Title Relinquished
A new champion needed to be crowned on the developmental brand after Oba Femi left the title in the ring following his defence over Leon Slater. Following the match, multiple video packages aired on Raw and SmackDown to hype Femi’s main roster arrival, which saw The Ruler make his official debut at the Royal Rumble.
