John Cena Denies Rumour Regarding Final WWE Opponent

John Cena has addressed his final match and opponent, clarifying that he will not be influencing who receives that honour at the end of the year.

The 17-time World Champion is now beginning to wind down his in-ring career with just 11 dates left on the retirement tour. Now that he is no longer WWE Champion after losing the title to Cody Rhodes back at SummerSlam, all eyes are on December and the final Cena match to mark the end of an era.

Given that Cena is one of, if not the, biggest wrestler to have debuted in the 21st century, the Hollywood star would have every right to choose how his final matches played out with the choice of opponent. However, according to Cena, that is not something that will happen, and never has.

Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy FallonCena was asked if he had an idea of who he wanted to be his final opponent, to which the former WWE Champion responded he didn’t and has never handpicked his opponents:

“No, no. I’ve never operated like that,” Cena responded when asked if he has a final opponent in mind. “I’ve just always kind of been reliable, showing up, and doing whatever I’m asked. And I really want this tour to be, not only special — it’ll always be special for me because you guys [the fans] are out there — I want it to be special for the business. My goal has always been to leave WWE better than I found it. So whoever they deem appropriate to get that energy, man, I’m cool with that.”

Cena also spoke about the decision to retire, with the 48-year-old noting that he doesn’t want to take a spot away from younger talent, and he knows the time is now:

“I also remember when I was a young kid back in 2002 thinking I’d never get a chance. And then when I did, I came up with like a young, hungry class. And I think if I hang around any longer than now, I’m just taking time away from those young guys who can be the next chance to make an impact. It’s time, man. It’s time.”

When Will John Cena Face His Final WWE Opponent?

While there has been no official date set for the final Cena match, it has been heavily rumoured that a Saturday Night’s Main Event special in December will be the show in question. Seemingly originally set for mid-December, it is now being reported that the show will take place later in the month to go head to head with AEW Worlds End, which is set to take place on December 27.

Cena will next compete at Clash in Paris against Logan Paul.
