Damian Priest recently admitted that it was hard to not let the emotions get the better of him in a massive WWE encounter.
Backlash 2023 saw the World Heavyweight Champion face off against music megastar Bad Bunny, who had previously been aligned with prior to joining The Judgment Day. On top of facing off against one of the biggest artists in the world, Priest vs. Bunny also took place in Puerto Rico in front of a passionate and packed crowd. With both men growing up on the island, they were both aware that this was going to be something special.
As Priest stood in the ring, the opening of Bunny’s hit Chambea hit to a thunderous ovation from the WWE fans, who sang along in unison to every word. Feeling the full force of the crowd, Priest admitted it was tough to keep his emotions in check.
Appeared on the Squared Circle Pit podcast, Priest admitted that he struggled to stay in character as he was also lost in the moment:
“Yeah, that’s exactly what happened (almost slipped out of character during Bad Bunny’s WWE Backlash entrance). I had to be like, hey, cut it out. Stay in it, stay in it… I’ve been in the crowd where you could feel the floor shaking a little bit and whatnot but being in the ring, you don’t really feel the tremble. You don’t really feel that. But I felt it that night. That was wild, in his entrance and I got goosebumps while I was in the ring waiting for him and then but I had to keep a straight face, you know? Angry or whatever but, that was one of the wildest things I had ever seen.”
Damian Priest Continues His Reign
Successfully cashing in his Money in the Bank contract at WrestleMania 40, Priest defeated Drew McIntyre to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. Having successfully defended the title against Jey Uso at Backlash in France, Priest remains the top champion on Monday Night Raw.
