Cody Rhodes has discussed what could have been at WrestleMania 42 had he not won the top prize in WWE, but noted that there wasn’t really a backup plan.
The American Nightmare won back the WWE Championship on the March 6 episode of SmackDown after he defeated Drew McIntyre in the main event. Now a 3-time World Champion in WWE< Rhodes will go on to WrestleMania 42 to face off against Randy Orton after The Viper won the Elimination Chamber the previous month.
Now that Rhodes is the champion again, he is guaranteed to be in a featured match at The Show of Shows in April. However, according to the SmackDown star, he was not aware of an alternative for Mania had he not been champion.
Cody Rhodes Says Not Main Eventing WrestleMania 42 Would Have Been “A Failure”
While speaking with Complex Graps, Rhodes spoke about his previous Mania main events and how he had no vision on a plan B if things did not go according to plan:
“I didn’t have a ‘plan B.’ It becomes champagne problems when you main event WrestleMania. The first time I did it, I didn’t win, but I got the taste for it, and the goal becomes, ‘I’m gonna main event WrestleMania again, but I’m going to win this time.’ The first Saturday, I didn’t win. Then, on Sunday in Philly, I did. The taste and addiction becomes, ‘I’m going to come right back to this spot’ and we did with John Cena and Vegas. I’m not sure what Plan B would have looked like. In my mind, not to use such a harsh term, I would have considered it a failure, but on my behalf. Maybe a failure on my behalf would have found me inspired or doing something different. I’m not sure. I really felt I needed to get back to Vegas. I didn’t have a Plan B.”
Rhodes is set to headline Mania for the 5th time in his career. After failing to defeat Roman Reigns in the main event of Mania 39, Rhodes headlined both nights the following year. After Rhodes and Rollins lost to The Rock and Reigns in the main event of night 1, Rhodes finally defeated Reigns in the main event of night 2 to finish the story. Holding the championship for a year, Rhodes dropped the title to John Cena in the main event of Mania 41, which saw Cena win his record-breaking 17th World Championship in Las Vegas.
