Gunther will defend the Intercontinental Championship against both Drew McIntyre and Sheamus at WrestleMania 39.
Om March 10th, a Fatal-5 Way match was originally planned to determine the number one contender for the title, with the participants being Karrion Kross, Xavier Woods, LA Knight, Drew McIntyre and Sheamus. The match would end with McIntyre and Sheamus picking up simultaneous pins, appearing to both win the match at the same time.
To solve the problem, WWE Official Adam Pearce booked a singles match for the March 17th episode of SmackDown, where the winner would go to WrestleMania.
Both men fought in a hard hitting match as Gunther watched on from ringside. Sheamus and McIntyre would hit simultaneous big boots on each other, looking as if neither would answer the 10 count from the referee. An angry Gunther came into the ring, with Imperium launching an attack from behind.
It was later announced that due to the interference, Gunther would have to face both men on the grandest stage.
