The first episode of AEW Dynamite in 2023 saw a major title change take place.
In the main event of the January 4th episode of Dynamite, Darby Allin would defeat Samoa Joe to capture the TNT Championship for the second time in his career.
The action was high paced from the outset, with Allin diving outside of the ring and attacking Joe before the opening bell even rang. The assualt would continue, with a skateboard attack and a dive off the ladder taking place.
The hometown hero was selling the knee as he made his way down the ramp and into the ring. The match finally began, where Joe took control by overpowering Allin.
The match would conclude when Allin drove Joe into an exposed turnbuckle. After hitting two Coffin Drops, Darby Allin would pin Joe to win the match and the championship. After the match confetti rained down in the arena, along with Darby Allin’s long time ally Sting coming to the ring to celebrate the victory.
The victory ends Samoa Joe’s reign at 46 days, with the former champion winning the title at the Full Gear pay-per-view. Joe defeated then champion Wardlow and Powerhouse Hobbs in a triple threat match to become the champion.
The victory for Allin now begins a second reign with the TNT Championship. Darby Allin first captured the gold back in November 2020, where Allin would defeat Cody Rhodes to win the championship.
