WWE Survivor Series WarGames Review

WWE brought the WarGames stipulation to the main roster for the first time at Survivor Series 2022. The show took place at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. 15,609 was the reported attendance for the event.

Bianca Belair, Mia Yim, Alexa Bliss, Asuka and Becky Lynch vs. Bayley, IYO SKY, Dakota Kai, Nikki Cross and Rhea Ripley – Women’s WarGames match:

Bianca Belair and Dakota Kai started the match for their respective teams. As team Damage CTRL had the advantage, IYO SKY was the next competitor to enter the ring. Belair tried to take control, but the numbers game caught up. Asuka would come in next to even up the numbers, with Belair recovering and launching Kai into the cage. Nikki Cross entered next, grabbing multiple weapons before entering the cage. Trash can lids would then come into play, utilised by team Damage CTRL. Alexa Bliss entered in next, targeting Cross in the early stages. Cross would climb to the top of the cage, diving off the top onto all of the competitors. Bayley entered the match next, pulling out multiple ladders and a table before entering. the match and dominating the competitors in the ring. Mia Yim grabbed trash cans before entering the match, throwing them at Damage CTRL. 4 top rope spots took place consecutively as the counter hit zero and Rhea Ripley entered the match. Ripley beat up all of the competitors in the ring, with all 5 members standing tall as Becky Lynch made her way to the match and WarGames officially begun. Lynch would fight off Damage CTRL, hitting as leg drop onto IYO SKY who has a trash can over her head. Ripley would take control, hitting a Riptide onto Lynch, but Asuka would break up the pinfall attempt. Asuka sprayed mist into the eyes of Ripley, blinding her and briefly taking Ripley out of the match. Bayley hit a Roseplant onto the steel in-between the ring, but once again Asuka would break up the pinfall. IYO SKY hit Mia Yim and Bianca Belair with a top of the cage moonsault, which the crowd reacted strongly to. Cross brought out handcuffs, trying to cuff Bliss to the cage, but they were cuffed to each other, with Bliss driving both her and Cross to the mat. Becky Lynch would place IYO SKY and Dakota Kai onto a table and hit a top cage leg drop to win the match for her team. ***

AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor:

The match started slightly slower with a feeling out process. Styles would take control with kicks to the hamstring of Balor. Balor would then take control with multiple knees to the midsection of Styles. Styles would go outside of the ring, where Dominik would pull Styles off of the apron, which ensued a brawl between The Good Brothers and Dominik Mysterio and Damian Priest. All 4 men would fight off into the crowd, leaving Balor and Styles alone in the ring. Balor attempted to hit Styles with the Styles Clash, but Styles countered into a Calf Crusher, which Balor fought out of. Styles attempted a 450, bit had to roll out of the way as Balor moved, who then tried to hit a Coup de Grace, but Styles would move. Styles would hit a Phenomenal Forearm to win the match. ***1/2

Ronda Rousey vs. Shotzi – Singles match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship:

Shotzi would begin with multiple flurries, but Rousey would counter with various judo throws. Rousey locked in an ankle lock, but Shotzi fought out of it. Shayna Baszler, who accompanied Rousey to the ring, was taken out in the ringside area. Back in the ring, Rousey would take control, toying with Shotzi. Eventually, Shotzi would land a right hand on Rousey, with both women spilling to the outside of the ring. Shotzi, Ronda and Shayna would all fall onto fans in the front row, causing them to fall out of their chairs. Back in the ring, a top rope throw was hit by Rousey, but Shotzi would kick out. A Piper’s Pit and an Armbar would allow Rousey to retain the championship. ***

Seth Rollins (c) vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Austin Theory – Triple Threat match for the United States Championship:

Lashley sent Theory out of the ring as soon as the bell rang. Lashley continued his dominance, with Rollins briefly taking control until Theory made his way back into the match. Back in the ring, Lashley would double team Rollins and Theory. All 3 men would go the ringside area, with chairs and steel step being utilised. Theory and Rollins would have brief stints in control as Lashley sold on the outside. Rollins hit multiple dives to the outside, taking out Lashley and Theory in the process. Lashley put the Hurt Lock on Rollins while Theory put the sleeper onto Lashley. Theory was sent to the outside, Rollins hit a Pedigree on Lashley but only got a 2 count. Lashley applied The Hurt Lock on Theory, who used the ropes to attempt to pin Lashley, which was broken up by a Rollins frog splash for a 2 count. Rollins hit a suplerplex onto Theory, but was speared by Lashley at a Falcon Arrow attempt. Theory pinned Rollins off of the Spear to win the match and become the new United States Champion. ****

The Bloodline [Roman Reigns, The Usos, Solo Sikoa and Sami Zayn] vs. Team Brutes [Sheamus, Butch, Ridge Holland, Kevin Owens and Drew McIntyre] – Men’s WarGames match:

Butch and Jey Uso started the match for their respective teams with a lengthy standoff. Butch would target the fingers of Jey’s hand, before being slammed into the cage by Jey Uso, who remained in control for the remainder of the starting 5 minute period. Ridge Holland was next into the match, as Team Brutes won the advantage on the go-home SmackDown. Butch and Holland targeted Jey’s arms throughout the 3 minute period, dominating the tag team champion. Sami Zayn was forced to enter the match next, slowly making his way to the cage. Zayn wanted to work with Jey in the match, but Jey Uso seemed reluctant. Drew McIntyre entered the match next, throwing Jey Uso into the cage multiple times. Zayn would once again save Jey Uso. Jimmy Uso entered the match next, grabbing 3 tables on his way into the cage. Zayn and Jey Uso would then have a verbal altercation, which the members of Team Brutes in the ring took advantage of. Kevin Owens was next into the match, bringing 3 chairs into the age with him. The Usos would be attacked with chairs, with Owens then hitting a Cannonball and a Swanton Bomb. After The Bloodline taking control briefly, Jimmy Uso was driven through a table. Solo Sikoa entered the match next, taking out all of Team Brutes. With everyone down, Sheamus entered the match. Sheamus would singlehandedly bring down The Bloodline, before bringing his teammates to their feet and beating down The Bloodline against the cage. Reigns was last to enter, with a mass brawl ensuing in the left ring. Reigns took down all members of Team Brutes, before being neutralised by Sheamus. All members of The Bloodline received Beats of the Bodhran. Reigns hit a spear onto Sheamus, but was saved by Butch. Jey Uso accidentally Superkicked Sami Zayn, which got massive boos from the live crowd. Solo Sikoa hit Drew McIntyre with a Spinning Solo through a table, Owens hot Sikoa with a Stunner, but Reigns broke up the pin. Owens hit Reigns with a Pop-Up-Powerbomb and a Stunner, but Zayn stopped the referee from counting to 3. Zayn hit a Helluva kick onto Owens, allowing Jey Uso to hit a splash and win the match. ****1/2
