The SmackDown World Cup officially kicked off on the November 11th edition of SmackDown, with 2 names advancing to the semi-finals.

It was announced on the show that the 8 competitors in the inaugural tournament are Santos Escobar, Shinsuke Nakamura, Braun Strowman, Jinder Mahal, Ricochet, Mustafa Ali, Sami Zayn and Butch. Two first round matches would take place on the show, with Santos Escobar defeating Shinsuke Nakamura and Braun Strowman defeating Jinder Mahal to see each man advance to their respective semi-final match. It should be noted that as the bracket has not been officially revealed, it is unknown who each man will face in the next round.

The remaining first round matches of Ricochet vs. Mustafa Ali and Sami Zayn vs. Butch has been scheduled to take place on the November 18th edition of SmackDown. The winner of the tournament will win a trophy and an opportunity at the Intercontinental Championship, currently held by Gunther.
