Rey Mysterio is the new number one contender to the Intercontinental Championship, which is currently held by Gunther.
A Fatal 4 Way match to determine the next number one contender took place on the October 14th edition of SmackDown. The match was originally due to see Sheamus, Ricochet, Solo Sikoa and Karrion Kross face off for the opportunity at the IC Title. However, during the cold open of SmackDown, Kross was seen in the parking lot shortly after being involved in a car accident. Kross would then be attacked by Drew McIntyre and later assessed for injuries.
In a backstage segment, Rey Mysterio would approach Triple H. Mysterio stated that he can’t fight his son and is tired of The Judgment Day, requesting to quit. Triple H led Mysterio into his office to try and come to a new arrangement.
The final match of the show would see the Fatal 4 Way match take place. However, after Sheamus, Ricochet and Sikoa made their entrances, it was announced that Kross would be unable to compete, with Mysterio being the replacement. Mysterio would go on to win the match, pinning Ricochet to become victorious.
After the match, Mysterio told the camera that this was his new home, referring to SmackDown, meaning that the former WWE Champion is now on the blue brand and has detached from The Judgment Day feud.
This will be the first time that Gunther and Rey Mysterio have faced each other one on one. The date of the title match is still to be determined.
