More details have emerged regarding the backstage altercation at AEW Dynamite between Andrade el Idolo and Sammy Guevara.
It was previously reported that Guevara and el Idolo has a heated confrontation backstage. The result led to Andrade’s match pulled from the October 7th Rampage, while Guevara remained on the show. Guevara would team with Chris Jericho to defeat Bryan Danielson and Daniel Garcia.
The additional information comes courtesy of Dave Meltzer from Wrestling Observer Radio, who has a detailed timeline of events regarding the incident:
“So Tuesday night, they were talked to, both of them, and they were told no fighting. Andrade was told that if this is your idea, you’re not going to get fired if you fight, but you will be sent home, and Andrade said don’t worry, nothing is going to happen, there is going to be no fighting, this is Tuesday night. Sammy was the same thing, nothing is going to happen.
They had security there, everybody was warned ahead of time. And then, I’ve probably heard about 5 different stories, but 3 of them are identical, which is probably similar to what you [Alvarez] have heard, and the 4th one is somewhat identical.
This is what I have heard from someone who I totally trust on this one. Andrade was waiting, everybody was waiting, Andrade was waiting in the hallway, he got 2 punches in before it was broken up. Sammy didn’t fight back, obviously and if you watch the show tonight, the punches didn’t, they didn’t leave a mark, so it wasn’t like they were solid punches or anything like that. But he did throw 2 punches, and it was broken up right away and Andrade was sent home.”
Meltzer would also state the reported motivation for Andrade el Idolo’s actions, stating that the reason is so el Idolo can be released from his AEW contract:
“Andrade is trying to get fired, we all know that. So far, when guys want to leave, some will go to great extremes to do that. It has happened in WWE, I have talked to people in WWE who have tried to get fired with some of the craziest things in the world. I have told them look, it’s not going to work. There were some crazy stories of people trying to do some crazy things to get fired.
Getting in a fight was never one of them, but there’s much crazier things than that from people who wanted to leave, get out and they were not going to be allowed to do that, because the company was not going to release them.
So now there is a situation on the other front, and there’s not that many, it’s like 3, that want to leave. There’s different stories and whatever, Andrade is one of them, and you know, he has basically said it publicly in that interview.”
Features of Wrestling will continue to provide updates to the story when they become available.
