Jon Moxley defeated Bryan Danielson at AEW Grand Slam to capture the AEW World Championship for a 3rd time, becoming the first person to hold the title for 3 separate reigns.
The match took place in the main event of Grand Slam, taking place inside of Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The crowd were cheering both men throughout their respective entrances, giving the match a big fight feel. MJF would sit in the hospitality box, clutching the Casino Ladder match chip.
Danielson was physical from the outset, hitting Mox with stiff strikes and kicks. Moxley would eventually retaliate with hard shots of his own. Physicality continued throughout the match, with more hard strikes taking place outside of the ring. Moxley and Danielson would also exchange submission holds, but each competitor would be able to get out of the respective holds.
The closing moments of the match would see Jon Moxley hit a Death Rider onto the entrance ramp, but Danielson would kick out at the last second. Moxley would then lock a sleeper onto Danielson, which was transitioned into a tighter sleeper hold that made Bryan Danielson pass out, giving Moxley the victory.
As previously mentioned, the victory marks Jon Moxley’s 3rd reign with the AEW Championship. Moxley would first win the title at AEW Revolution 2020, then dropping the title to Kenny Omega at Winter is Coming 2020. The second reign came when Mox defeated Hiroshi Tanahasi at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view, becoming Interim Champion due to CM Punk being injured. When Punk returned, Mox would squash Punk in 3 minutes to become the Undisputed Champion, before losing the title back to Punk at All Out 2022. Due to the title being vacated after All Out, the Grand Slam Tournament was put in place.
In total, 3 new champions were crowned at AEW Dynamite Grand Slam, with a new ROH World Champion and new tag team champions crowned on the show.
