Former WWE United Kingdom Champion Ilja Dragunov returned to NXT on the September 30th episode.

The main event of the show would see Tyler Bate battle JD McDonagh, with the winner becoming the number one contender for Bron Breakker’s NXT Championship. The match would see McDonagh pick up the victory, hitting the Devil Inside to pick up the pinfall victory.

Breakker, who was on commentary for the main event, would confront JD McDonagh in the ring after the bell. As the two men stood face to face, the music of Ilja Dragunov hit and The mad Russian made his way to the ring. Both Dragunov and McDonagh stared down Breakker as the show went off the air.

Ilja Dragunov and JD McDonagh have history from their time in NXT UK. McDonagh previously challenged Dragunov for the NXT UK title back in May. Dragunov successfully retained, and per the conditions of the stipulation, JD McDonagh was forced to leave the NXT UK brand.

Also on the September 20th NXT, the state of the North American Title was revealed.
