AEW Clarifies Interim World Championship Process

All Elite Wrestling have released a press release stating what steps will be taken to crown an interim AEW World Champion.

On the June 3rd edition of AEW Rampage, World Champion CM Punk announced that he is injured and will be currently unable to compete. However, AEW President Tony Khan has made the decision that Punk can keep hold of the title and will defend it again when he is healthy. While Punk undergoes surgery and recovers, an interim champion will be crowned. It should be noted that social media graphics and commentary gave conflicting information, confusing fans as to what the next steps would be.

The full press release can be found below.

The press release states that on the June 8th episode of AEW Dynamite, a Battle Royale will open the show. The winner of that match will face number 1 ranked competitor Jon Moxley in the main event of the June 8th show. The winner of the main event will go on to Forbidden Door as AEW’s challenger for the interim World Title.

At the New Japan Dominion pay-per-view, which is due to take place on Sunday June 12th, Hiroshi Tanahashi will face Hirooki Goto. The winner of that match will go on to Forbidden Door on June 26th to face the AEW representative. The winner of the Forbidden Door match will be crowned the interim AEW World Champion.
