The first match has been revealed for the upcoming AEW and NJPW crossover show Forbidden Door. The match will see AEW World Champion CM Punk facing off against New Japan star Hiroshi Tanahashi.
On the June 1st episode of AEW Dynamite, CM Punk teamed with FTR to defeat Max Caster and The Gunn Club. Punk, who won the AEW World Title at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view, grabbed the microphone afterwards to address the live crowd in Los Angeles. The AEW World Champion stated that he has a lot of work to do and that he has to get better. CM Punk would then go on to reference Forbidden Door, stating that to sell the pay-per-view the next challenger should come out. Tanahashi’s music then hit as the New Japan star made his way to the stage.
The Ace of NJPW greeted the fans on the stage, before referencing that he wants to be the next AEW World Champion. While not officially announced, this match will seemingly be for the title. If Tanahashi is victorious at Forbidden door, the AEW World Title will be added to the long list of accolades for the New Japan star. Hiroshi Tanahasi has captured the IWGP Heavyweight Championship 8 times, Intercontinental Championship twice, United States Championship 3 times and the Tag Team Championship 3 times amongst multiple other accomplishments in New Japan Pro Wrestling and beyond.
AEW x NJPW Forbidden door will be airing live Sunday June 26th from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
