CM Punk is the new AEW World Champion following a victory over now former champion “Hangman” Adam Page at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view.
The match took place in the main event of the show. The crowd were chanting throughout and kept the energy up despite the long runtime of the pay-per-view. The AEW fans in Vegas were also divided throughout the match, frequently switching their support between each competitor.
“Hangman” Adam Page would hit multiple big moves in an attempt to retain the title, including a moonsault to the outside of the ring. However, Page would injure his knee after executing the move, which would be a factor in the rest of the match.
Page attempted everything to keep the championship, including hitting Punk with his own finisher the GTS. This looked like it could have been the finish, but Punk would get his shoulder up at the very last moment to allow the match to continue.
Following the referee being knocked down, Page would go to the outside and grabbed the AEW World Title, contemplating striking Punk with it to be victorious. However, the Hangman would think better of it and instead attempted the Buck Shot Lariat. The delay would end up being the downfall of Page, as Punk would counter this into a GTS to become the new champion.
Page captured the AEW World Championship at the 2021 Full Gear pay-per-view. The now former champion defeated Kenny Omega to capture the title for the first time in his career. In regards to CM Punk, this is his first championship reign in AEW following the surprise return to wrestling back in August 2021.
